Aidan Lees

Traumatic brain injury survivor and trustee of After Matters.

On 25th May 2018 I suffered a traumatic brain injury.

I had not long turned 18 and was now old enough to go out to the pub. Unfortunately, on this night my life was to change forever. I sustained my brain injury by a pool cue being thrown at me, which shattered my skull and was embedded 2cm deep inside my brain. I was rushed to hospital for emergency life saving surgery. The injury had paralysed my left side and I had to have intensive physio to help me to learn to walk again.

Although I survived, I still struggle with long term effects and I will for the rest of my life.

It is a very long, scary and sometimes lonely journey, unless you’ve had a brain injury yourself, no-one seems to fully understand. I am now learning to build and understand my new life and I want to live my best life!

When my mum mentioned about setting up After Matters I was really happy to get involved and help other survivors like myself, to come to terms with their new way of life. I want to give as much help and support as I can.
